The Piriformis Muscle – Small but Mighty

If you’ve ever experienced tightness or discomfort in your hips, lower back, or even partially down your legs, your piriformis muscle might be the culprit. This small but mighty muscle plays a big role in your body’s mobility and at Movement by Kiko, we see just how much it can impact everyday movement.

What Is the Piriformis Muscle?

The piriformis is a deep hip muscle located in the gluteal region. Its job is to assist in rotating your hip and stabilizing your pelvis. The sciatic nerve runs underneath the piriformis, which can become irritated if the piriformis is tight or inflamed—a condition known as piriformis syndrome.

Why Does the Piriformis Get Tight?

Prolonged sitting, repetitive movements, or improper alignment during exercise can overwork the piriformis. When this happens, it can create tension or pain that radiates through the hips, back, and even partially down the legs.

How Pilates Can Help

Pilates focuses on balanced strength, flexibility, and alignment—all of which can relieve tension in the piriformis. By strengthening the surrounding muscles and improving posture, Pilates reduces the strain on the piriformis, allowing it to relax and function properly.

At Movement by Kiko, we incorporate targeted stretches and exercises to release the piriformis and strengthen the supporting muscles. From gentle hip openers to dynamic stabilizing movements, we tailor our approach to help you move freely and comfortably.
