What’s the Hype with Pilates? Why Pilates is More Than Just a Trend
Trends have their own strange rhythm. Why something becomes popular for a bit, fades, and then resurfaces later can be a mystery. I mean, if I’d kept all my clothes from high school, maybe they’d be "cool" again now, but honestly… they were ugly then, and they’re still ugly now.
But Pilates? It’s had a bit of a renaissance, especially here in Atwater Village and Pasadena, and there’s a reason it’s back in the spotlight. Pilates has gained serious popularity, even in just the past year. And like most things, there are different schools of thought about it. Today, I’m just going to talk about what Pilates means to me and why I think it’s a whole lot more than just a trend.
What Pilates Is to Me
For me, Pilates is about re-teaching my body how to function optimally, starting with neuromuscular alignment and re-learning internal cues of safety (though that’s a topic for another day). At its core, Pilates is a practice of mindful movement. It reconnects the body and mind, helping you feel secure and supported in your own skin.
What I love most is that Pilates doesn’t demand high-intensity training. It’s accessible to just about every body type and age. Many exercises allow you to work on your back, minimizing the impact of gravity, which makes Pilates ideal for most anyone seeking post-physical therapy support. This aspect of Pilates - working through injuries, safely building strength, and learning proper form makes it perfect for rehab or injury prevention.
The Physical Benefits of Pilates
Here’s why Pilates is worth the hype:
Balance, Flexibility, and Coordination: Pilates isn’t only about building strength; it’s also about creating balance and improving flexibility. With a focus on control and precision, Pilates helps your body move in harmony, building the kind of coordination that supports everyday movements.
Mind-Body Connection: As a dancer, I love the flow and rhythm of a Pilates session. The movements feel natural and expressive, almost like choreography. Pilates has a way of releasing tension while expanding your range of motion, much like dance does.
A Complement to Other Activities: Even if you’re already active, whether it’s dancing, running, or (in my case) practicing Muay Thai, Pilates can add balance and strength to your routine. When I practice Pilates regularly, I notice an improvement in my stability, posture, and overall ability to move confidently and powerfully in all disciplines.
Pilates Is Versatile and Adaptable
Another thing I appreciate about Pilates is its adaptability. Like other workout styles, Pilates offers both closed-chain and open-chain exercises, as well as eccentric and concentric movements. Depending on what your body needs, you can adjust your practice to incorporate more resistance or gravity-based exercises. Pilates isn’t a one-size-fits-all workout, it meets you where you are and grows with you.
Why Pilates Is More Than a Trend
The hype around Pilates isn’t just hype. Whether you’re in Atwater Village, Pasadena, or beyond, Pilates offers real, long-lasting benefits. It’s a practice that can improve flexibility, build strength, and provide a grounded way to reconnect with your body—all without the high impact or high intensity. So, if you’re curious about what Pilates could bring to your life, why not give it a try? You may just find it’s the one “trend” you actually stick with.
